Rarely, do we ever dislike someone for a good reason.
We criticize people without knowing them, and make assumptions without knowing anything.
We hear a rumor, and pass it along. But when we hear something said about ourselves, we're hurt and confused why someone would ever say something like that.
We are a world of hypocrites- we wonder why someone would say anything about us, without actually knowing us. Yet, we do the exact same thing.
Maybe it's jealousy. Maybe because of intimidation? Maybe because we think it's funny. Maybe it's because we only know one side of a story.
It's been brought to my attention lately on more than one occasion that making fun of someone for the sheer fun of it makes people think they are funny, witty, and cool. That making some body's personal business into public humiliation is the best part of their days.
Pity.
There will always be haters. Always.
Our generation is living in a sad reality:
We will be called "bitches" and "pussies" because we stand up for our friends, and ourselves.
We'll be called "whiners" and "complainers" for having a normal, human, and emotional reaction to betrayal, belittling, lies, hurt, and heartbreak.
We'll be called "whipped" because we put someone else's happiness above our own; because we are capable of selfless, genuine love with one person instead of endless hooking up.
And we'll be called "sluts" for hooking up with one guy who isn't our boyfriend.
We'll be called "alcoholics" if we have one rough night of partying.
We might not get a call or text back because we might not be "hot enough", despite our personality.
People might change their minds about us not because of what we did, but because of what other people said.
People will constantly be judging us, waiting to pounce on anything they can find to start a rumor or joke about us.
People will say things about us, not knowing the truth. But people just as well might say something, knowing the truth, and saying it anyway.
People may or may not defend us, depending on the status quot.
We'll be hated for things we've done, and things we haven't.
People will say just about anything behind our back, but almost nothing to our face.
We'll have friends who use us for parties, rides, money, etc. but not for real friendship.
But no matter what you do, or how hard you try to give no one a reason to hate/dislike you- there will always be someone who does.
Some days it'll tear us down, make us want to give up, and begin to wonder if what people are saying is true.
But the only person who knows you, is you. And when you go to bed at night, and wake up the next morning, you have your own opinion of yourself.
Let people talk, let them spread lies. Let them assume, and let them criticize.
But also, let the hate, motivate. Let it light a fire of its own, but strictly a fire within yourself to grin, bear it, and keep your head held high.
Because in the end, that's all you can really do.
